3 research institutes equipped with world class research capacity
Gachon University's three major research institutes (Gachon Brain Science Research Institute, Lee Gil-Yeo Cancer & Diabetes Research Institute, and Gachon Bio-Nano Research Institute) were selected as World Class University (a world-class research-oriented university), are Leading a new concept of study.
Gachon Brain Science Research Institute
Gachon Brain Research Institute was established in September 2004 as the first brain research institute in Korea. In 2004, it introduced ultra-high-resolution 7.0T MRI and HRRT-PET in Asia and began to spur the development of Korea's brain science field, which had been lagging. By building state-of-the-art medical imaging equipment, it has developed global research capabilities. In 2009, it completed the brain map of a living person for the first time globally and accumulated a lot of know-how and research results in developing imaging devices and technologies. Based on this, to complete the world's second ultra-high magnetic field 11.74T MRI system in 2022 after the United States, this institute plans to take another leap forward through leading research rather than pursuing research. 11.74T MRI is expected to provide ultra-high-resolution images beyond our imagination than MRI currently used in clinical practice. As a result, brain science will enter a new level of electricity that has never been experienced before. This research institute is expected to greatly contribute to the development of brain science and improve humanity's quality of life.
Lee Gil-Yeo Cancer and Diabetes Research Institute
The Lee Gil-Yeo Cancer and Diabetes Research Institute was opened in May 2008 to free humanity from the suffering of these diseases through research on diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer and diabetes, which are the homework of medicine. Afterward, the institute actively attracted world-class scholars and introduced state-of-the-art equipment to build state-of-the-art research facilities such as the Korea Mouse Metabolic Phenotype Analysis Center, the first and largest mouse metabolic characterization center in Asia. Based on excellent infrastructure, the institute is continuously striving to secure cutting-edge research capabilities that compete with the world by focusing on cancer and diabetes, the greatest enemies of humanity. As a result, the first genome mapping for Koreans, the development of the world's first molecular diagnostic kit for cancer prognosis, and the discovery of an obesity-suppressing protein in the brain achieve excellent results.
Gachon Bio-Nano Research Institute
Gachon Bio-nano Research Institute was opened in March 2007 to develop and carry out bio-nanotechnology research assignments by inviting excellent researchers from home and abroad. The institute is currently carrying out assignments in cooperation with domestic and foreign research institutes based on a broad understanding of the bio-nano field that leads the future convergence studies. In addition, for interdisciplinary convergence in the bio-nano field, the mainstay of future science and technology, faculty members of various majors are working to foster convergence research and research talents. Through this, the institute is expected to contribute to the development of bio-nanotechnology and industry as a research institute that improves university' research capacity and nurtures experts in the field of bio-nano.
