Thank you for visiting the ‘Fragrant and Beautiful Fountain (Gachon, 嘉泉)’ garden. I am Lee Gil-Ya, the president and Guardian of Gachon University.
Gachon University is recognized by others as ‘the university with the greatest potential for development in Korea’. It is a very meticulous and bold university united with a spirit of constant challenge. In the meantime, Gachon University has been fixing and correcting itself if there is anything lacking.
If there is any chance to get better, we have changed and again changed that Gachon University is being renewed day by day like a green leaf in spring. Outstanding talents are coming from all over the country, and excellent papers by young professors are pouring in. Domestic and foreign patent applications and research assignment orders are also making a long line.
Gachon University is located in Seongnam, south of Namhansanseong Fortress. It has 'Bundang that they say it is under Heaven' on its left arm, 'Seoul Jamsil', the site of the 1988 Olympic Games on its right arm, and 'Pangyo Techno Valley' on its chest.
It's surprising that Gachon University and Stanford University, the symbol of Silicon Valley in the United States, have similar location conditions.
Our Gachon University's motto is 'Philanthropy, Service and Patriotism'.
To young people of today, it may sound old-fashioned. However, if I could become something to help the poor and needy, and make my neighbors happy, that would be philanthropy, service and patriotism, wouldn't it?
To do this, you need to become a leader in any field to give more, take care of your neighbors, and serve the country more. Being No. 1 doesn't mean stepping on others or knocking them down.
You have to love and enjoy your work in order to become a leader.
I have lived my whole life with the heart of planting a tree in a barren land. I have been running day and night in the two fields of medicine and education. Medicine and/or education is by no means a fortune accumulating business or a lucrative business. It is a ‘dream cultivating assignment’ by planting an apple tree today, looking ahead for a hundred or a thousand years.
Today, the era of artificial intelligence in the 4th industrial revolution is a ‘world without correct answers’. Knowledge is now freely available on the Internet. The ‘old and hardened knowledge’ in the 20th century model answer is useless for anything.
When you wake up, the rules of the game change frequently, and today's cutting-edge technology will become outdated tomorrow. Only creative talent can respond to the upheaval.
Gachon University raises and nurtures challenging talents full of knowledge and thinking, adventure and curiosity, leisure and positive mind.
I want all of our students to be the first penguins to jump into the ice waters of the Antarctic. Have an indomitable spirit that throws yourself into the unknown cold sea without hesitation while others hesitate. What if you fail? Failure is the precious foundation of your life. A person who follows the footsteps of others will never leave his own footstep.
We still have a long way to go. Although we are just about to enter the top 10 private universities in Korea, we have to keep running and running, looking ahead like a rhinoceros horn, until we stand tall as a 'global prestigious university'.
